Static and Kinematic GNSS-based Positioning Using GIPSY/X

September 4th -6th 2024

This course will cover the fundamentals of using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL’s) GIPSY/X software package to perform static and kinematic precise point positioning of terrestrial stations from GNSS data. The class will be presented using hands-on processing of GNSS data by each participant, with presentations walking through specific examples to derive GNSS-based observations of station position, clock, and troposphere. The presentations will be centered around GIPSY’s primary user interface for GNSS-based precise point positioning, and preceded by descriptions of the primary GIPSY modules that are specifically being executed by that interface. Strategies and options for achieving optimal positioning accuracy with GIPSY will be discussed, including data editing, troposphere modeling, antenna calibration, loading, and GIPSY’s single receiver ambiguity resolution capability using JPL’s GNSS orbit and clock products. Participants will have an opportunity to process both course-provided data and samples of their own data (should they choose to bring their own data, e.g. RINEX files). User resources such as the GIPSY Forum and GIPSY Licensing will also be highlighted.

Prerequisites:

   1) Working experience with Unix/Linux operating systems. GIPSY/X consists of software modules that are executed on the Unix/Linux command line.

   2) General knowledge of the fundamental principles of the Global navigation satellite system at its usage to perform precise positioning.

   3) General knowledge of geodetic phenomenon that affect station motion and GNSS measurements.

Instructor: Member of JPL’s GIPSY/X Team

Language: Class will be in English

Date and Location:

The class will be held for three days, September 4-6, 2024, at the Space and Earth Geodetic Analysis Laboratory (SEGAL), University of Beira Interior, in Covilhã, Portugal.

Registration Information:

An application to participate in this class must be submitted by July 4, 2024. See Registration.

Participation in the class is then limited to those applicants that receive a confirmation of participation. The class will be limited to no more than 25 participants. While preference will be given to licensed GIPSY users, a GIPSY license is not required of participants. Since class size is limited, confirmed participants should be committed to attend the class.
